Breed History

The Sealyham Terrier was developed in the mid-19th century by Captain John Edwardes, a Welshman who lived at Sealyham House in Pembrokeshire, Wales. He aimed to create a strong, fearless, and compact terrier to hunt vermin, badgers, foxes, and otters. The breed was refined using various terrier types, possibly including the Welsh Terrier, Dandie Dinmont Terrier, Fox Terrier, and West Highland White Terrier.

Sealyhams became popular as hunting companions, but their popularity surged in the early 20th century when they became fashionable pets among British royalty and Hollywood stars. Despite their noble history, Sealyham Terriers are now considered a rare breed, with declining numbers worldwide.

Why Sealyham Terriers Make Great Pets

Sealyham Terriers are small but sturdy dogs with a big personality. They are known for their friendly and fun-loving nature, making them excellent companions for families and individuals alike. Unlike some terriers, Sealyhams tend to be less hyperactive, making them suitable for apartment living. However, they still have a strong prey drive and enjoy outdoor activities.

They are also known for their distinctive, expressive face, often accentuated by their long, bushy eyebrows and mustache. While intelligent and trainable, they can have an independent streak, meaning early training and socialization are important. Their wiry coat requires regular grooming, but they shed minimally.

Despite their aristocratic history, Sealyhams are now considered one of the rarest terrier breeds, with conservation efforts underway to preserve them.
