Breed History
The West Highland White Terrier, or "Westie," originated in Scotland in the 1700s. They were bred for hunting vermin such as rats, foxes, and otters. Legend has it that Colonel Edward Donald Malcolm of Poltalloch developed the white coloration after a tragic accident—one of his brown terriers was mistaken for a fox and shot. Determined to breed only white dogs for safety, he refined what became the West Highland White Terrier.
By the early 20th century, the Westie gained recognition as a distinct breed. The Kennel Club officially recognized it in 1906, and the American Kennel Club (AKC) followed in 1908. Today, Westies are beloved companions known for their spunky personalities, loyalty, and adaptability.

Why Westies Make Great Pets
West Highland White Terriers are independent yet affectionate, making them excellent companions for families, singles, and seniors. They are sturdy for their size, adaptable to various living situations, and have a playful yet dignified nature. Their high intelligence and strong prey drive make them great at agility and obedience training, though they require patience due to their independent streak.
Westies are also relatively low-maintenance when it comes to grooming, though their coat requires regular brushing to stay clean and mat-free. Their cheerful personality and charming looks make them one of the most beloved small terrier breeds worldwide.
